2008 Volkswagen Jetta
Jetta
Volkswagen of America's cleanest diesel ever for the U.S., the Jetta TDI, was unveiled in 2008. This Jetta TDI meets emissions standards applicable in all 50 states, including the most stringent “TIER 2/BIN 5” or “LEV II/LEV” requirement limiting nitrogen oxide emissions to 0.05 g/mile. It meets the lowest emissions standards without the use of urea injection. Instead, a nitrogen oxide storage catalyst reduces NOx emissions by up to 90 percent.
The engine management system in the Jetta changes operating modes periodically to treat the NOx that has been stored in the catalytic converter. A particulate filter in the exhaust system further reduces emissions. The Jetta TDI is one of the first products of the BLUETEC offensive initiated jointly by Audi, Mercedes- Benz and Volkswagen. The goal of this partnership is to establish the concept of BLUETEC as a uniform label for clean and highly fuel-efficient, diesel-powered cars and SUVs with 50-state compliant engines.

2008 Volkswagen Passat
Passat
For 2008, the Passat's trim levels have been overhauled; it's now available in Turbo, Komfort, Lux and VR6. Newly standard features include manual sunshades for the rear side windows, a 12-way power-adjustable driver's seat and a leather steering wheel and shift knob. Volkswagen's 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder develops 200 horsepower and 207 pounds-feet of torque.

Either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 6-speed automatic that incorporates Tiptronic manual gear selection can team with the 4-cylinder engine. The 280-hp, 3.6- liter V-6 drives only the 6-speed automatic. The Passat is equipped with six standard airbags, including side-impact airbags for the front seats and side curtain airbags. All-disc antilock brakes, brake assist, a tire pressure monitoring system and an electronic stability system are standard.

2008 Volkswagen R32
R32
What distinguishes the R32 from the GTI is its 3.2-liter 6-cylinder and 4Motion all-wheel drive. Unlike the GTI, the R32 will be produced only as a 2-door. Also distinguishing the R32 from the GTI are its wider, lower stance, centered dual tailpipes, and yet another interpretation of the new plunging VW grille that incorporates brushed aluminum. The R32's 3.2-liter generates 250 hp and more than 230 pounds-feet of torque. The engine, which is the source of the 32 in the model name, is a staggered inline-6 - or what VW calls a VR6.
